6KM OPEN WATER CHARITY

SWIM

ONE EVENT, TWO GREAT CAUSES.

Swimming for children with disabilities is the biggest unmet need in sport. The water takes your weight; it’s a true leveller.

It relieves pain and offers freedom and independence that many of our children never experience elsewhere.

Cancer is still one of the biggest causes of death in young people under the age of 15.
Finding new ways to identify cancer in children and young people, and better, kinder ways to treat them means more will survive without the life-inhibiting side effects that can often come with remission.

THE CHALLENGE

This is by far be the longest swim I have ever attempted. I am not an athlete, nor a ‘proper swimmer’ - I actually taught myself front crawl after not being able to complete 25m in a pool without being exhausted. My technique is questionable at best, but I do love being outdoors and in nature. I expect the swim to take around 2hrs and I will not be wearing a wetsuit.

Covering 6km (that’s 240 lengths of a pool) I’ll be exposed to the rain, wind, chop and tides.

The biggest obstacle is actually not lack of swimming background or fitness but Thalassophopia - a fear of deep open water, I can honestly say the thought of swimming or bobbing about in the deep dark blue is terrifying!

I feel if I am asking people to donate their hard earned money, there must be a challenge, and this is mine.
